Home 2011-2012 Coaches Profiles Fujinaga, Kevin
Fujinaga, Kevin
Volleyball has been a strong part of my life for the past 14 years. (I can't believe I just said that). I began playing volleyball for the College Park Varsity team. this wasn't that difficult trips to NCS and one trip to NCS Finals. After graduating from College Park, I believed that Volleyball for me was a thing of the past, except in pick-up games with friends. However, during my 3rd year at UC Santa Cruz, I decided to try out for the NCAA team and made it as a defensive specialist. My 4th year at Santa Cruz game me the opportunity to start as the Captain and setter of the team. We finished in the top ten of NCAA Division III that year. Although I have continually played oof and on with various NCVA adult teams, and Chinese 9-man volleyball (a variation of the 6-man game we play), my playing career is definitely slowing down.I began coaching volleyball soon after leaving UC Santa Cruz. I convinced my brother (Brian) to coach at College Park again after he took a hiatus the year before. Actually, he thought he "retired" from coaching at that point. Brian also was coaching for Diablo Valley at the time, and I assisted him for two seasons of boys and girls. We coached several boys and girls team for 3 years together before I left for San Diego to get my Master's Degree in Education. While in San Diego I believed I would be taking it easy and concentrating on my studies. However, soon after arriving in San Diego I received a phone call from Luke Honnette (former player at College Park). He mentioned that the UC San Diego Club team needed a coach and asked me to fill in. I found enough time to fit this in, and coached the Club program for two years. During the 2nd year (2002-2003) we finished 3rd in the nation at the National finals.Last year I came home from UCSD and talked with Sean and Teresa about coaching for Diablo. Brian and I caoched the Girls Diablo Valley VBC 16-Fuji team last year together and we are currently coaching a boys 15's and 18's team (2006)

I have competed, coached, and officiated volleyball at all levels. Without a doubt, coaching volleyball is my favorite part of the sport. I believe volleyball is an incredible sport that requires both athleticism and dedication. I look forward to each year of coaching with great enthusiasm. Every team is different and offers new challenges and new triumphs! Diablo is an outstanding program to be a part of and I can't wait for this season to begin! GO DIALBO!!!!
